Renaturing Pathways – Learning about Nature-based Solutions

This game is presented in Chapter 4: Fostering regional and ecological resilience of the Resilience Learning Module II: Strategies & Actions developed by UCLG, UNDRR and UN-Habitat.

Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) are “solutions that are inspired and supported by nature, which are cost-effective, simultaneously provide environmental, social and economic
benefits and help build resilience. Such solutions bring more, and more diverse, nature and natural features and processes into cities, landscapes and seascapes, through locally adapted, resource-efficient and systemic interventions” (European Commission, n.d.).

LRGs have NbS at their disposal to mitigate, absorb, and prevent risks associated with different hazards and to strengthen resilience in their respective territories. At the same time, these nature-based tools contribute to protecting, recovering, and strengthening their respective ecosystems.

Rather than explaining one by one the different Nature-based Solutions in technical detail, the “Renaturing Pathways” dynamic invites participants to reflect on the usefulness and adaptability of these solutions to confront specific challenges faced by cities around the world. Through a group dynamic, it allows participants to familiarize themselves with a wide range of the Nature-based Solutions available, fosters peer-to-peer learning taking advantage of participants’ own knowledge and experiences, and invites insightful reflections on their appropriateness in different local and regional contexts, and the importance of integral approaches.
