Towards a Future for People – Learning Marketplace highlights resources on human mobility, gender equality, right to the city, and more

During UCLG’s Learning Forum in Daejeon, on October 11, 2022, our constituency, partners, and members of our learning community were invited to showcase their learning products and processes in an interactive and engaging Learning Marketplace, in order to facilitate new connections, synergies and collaborations.

Discover below some of the showcased experiences aligned to the Pact for the Future for People adopted by the UCLG Congress in Daejeon, as follows:

The Pact for the Future for People places people at the center, deepening the needs of current generations and expanding the rights of future ones by guaranteeing access to public services and the commons. As we acknowledge the impact of growing inequalities within and between cities, the Pact seeks to deliver fairness and intersectional justice for everyone and for every place.

Massive Open Online Course (MOOC)
“Localizing the Global Compacts on Migration and Refugees: Territorial Action on Human Mobility”

Building on the work led by LRGs on the urban governance of all human mobility, migration and forced displacement, notably through the MC2CM project, the Lampedusa Charter, and as part of the Mayors Mechanism’s Call to Local Action for Migrants and Refugees, UCLG, in partnership with UNHCR, ICMPD and UN-Habitat, is developing the online course “Localizing the Global Compacts on Migration and Refugees: Territorial Action on Human Mobility”.

Habitat International Coalition’s Co-Learning Spaces

Habitat International Coalition‘s (HIC) co-learning spaces are cross-regional, multi-session learning opportunities for interested HIC Members, Friends and allies to generate and multiply emancipatory learning practices based on human rights related to habitat, with a focus on building cross-regional strategies within the coalition for joint action through advocacy. They have emerged as a response to HIC Member priorities to strengthen the social force of HIC. Their objectives include:

  • Enhancing communication and critical consciousness of collective ways of thinking and acting in a transformative way.
  • Building and nurturing bridges across different geographies that face similar challenges and responses.
  • Building social force: Beyond traditional modes of training, the HIC co-learning spaces engage with learning as a practice of activating political change, developing our collective muscle and social force.

Three co-learning spaces have been developed so far on feminist approaches, land rights and multi-level advocay. In 2023 co-learning spaces on environmental justice and social production of habitat will be developed.

ICLD’s Toolbox for Local Governments to implement #SDG5 on Gender Equality

Operationalizing gender equality is a challenge in many places. As a help for local governments to become champions of gender equality and make concrete steps forward, ICLD has developed a toolbox that provides knowledge, strategies and inspiration to formulate concrete actions to advance gender equality at the local level: The Toolbox for Local Governments to implement #SDG5 on Gender Equality.

The toolbox is based on a research project conducted at three municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but the findings apply to many other countries.

The Right to the City Thematic Papers &
Indicators
by the Global Platform for the Right to the City

The Right to the City Thematic Papers provide an in depth understanding on a series of the Right to the City components such as non-discrimination, inclusive citizenship, quality public spaces, climate justice and others, with concrete examples and recommendations for LRGs.

On the other hand, the Right to the City indicators provide a framework for the follow-up of implementation of a series of public policies related to the Right to the City and its components, also supporting capacity building and knowledge exchange around strategies for the implementation of such policies.

Raoul Wallenberg Institute’s Handbook for Cities “Localising Human Rights in The Context of SDGs”

Building on its previous work, in 2022, the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI) continued its training programme for local governments and actors on human rights and SDGs. The 2022 programme is based on RWI’s Handbook for Cities “Localising Human Rights in The Context of SDGs”, combining both theoretical and practical implementation.

This handbook, co-created through a collaborative approach among researchers, CSOs and local governments, aims to offer practical guidance and suggested tools to guide local stakeholders on identifying local priorities and particularities, developing a policy through participatory processes, and develop tools to monitor and evaluate progress on localizing human rights in the context of SDGs.

International Labour Organization’s South-South and Triangular Cooperation Academy

In 2020-2021, the International Labour Organization (ILO) launched over 23 South-South and Triangular Cooperation projects across the world. These projects touched on a wide range of topics, including employment services, women economic empowerment, employment policies, skills, informality, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), labour migration, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), sustainable tourism, and Disaster Risk Reduction, among others. Moreover, they were adapted to address the impacts of COVID-19 on workers, particularly the most vulnerable or those who were hit the hardest, as well as post-COVID recovery strategies towards a better normal through decent work. ILO’s projects often include strong and innovative virtual components such as online platforms far exchange, virtual meetings and training, in close collaboration with its International Training Centre and international partners.

One of the outcomes of these collaborations is the open, massive and online training course “Local Economic Development for Cohesive Territories” coordinated with the UCLG Committee on Local Economic and Social Development, UCLG’s Learning team and the Andalusian Municipalities Fund for International Solidarity (FAMSI). This training course aims to analyse, share and generate ideas that can support local and regional actors in the promotion of local development strategies as an element of cohesion in a context of socio-economic recovery.

The course is available in English, Spanish and French.

Thanks again to UCLG for giving us the opportunity to share our learning experiences and present the work the we are doing. Daejeon was an opportunity to share a wide range of experience and reconnect after the long years of Covid. At the ILO, we especially value these experience where the South meets also the South, and the North, providing an opportunity for South-South and triangular Cooperation.
Pierre Martinot-Lagarde, International Labour Organization (ILO)
